My public persona has three facets, which isn’t enough to be three-dimensional. So in no particular order:
1. PhD candidate. I love following leads and investigating things with no criteria other than that they appeal to me at the time. I think my supervisor would prefer that I stick to my research topic.
2. Environmental/social activist/ratbag. I do this strictly for fun; as Emma Goldman is widely and mistakenly quoted as saying “If I can’t dance it’s not my revolution.” More seriously I find that spending a small amount of time every day believing that I can change the world and that my everyday acts are part of this provides the meaning that keeps me happy and functioning.
3. Computer/technical geek. Not so much an early adopter as an early adapter I get a kick out of putting things together in novel ways that goes beyond the utility value of the result.
So why avid scavenger? If you saw the boxes of, well, stuff, that I manage to amass despite my somewhat nomadic lifestyle you'd understand. A constant scourer of hard rubbish, Melbourne FreeCycle and other sources of free, ummm, stuff, I don't know what part of my pyche this obsession is feeding but it feels good.
